Des Moines Register Photos of the Year 2008

I came across the [news] Photos of the Year, 2008 from the Des Moines Register. There are 91 photos, so it takes a while to go through them all, but is totally worth it. I don't believe they are in any particular order.

My favorites are 38, 42, 44, 45, 74, 76, and 80. What are yours?

I'll be posting some of my favorite images from this year's Valley Church Great Pumpkin Party soon. Until then, I wanted to show you that some of the images I created this year made it to the Des Moines Register!

I'm not sure whether they made it to print or not - I will be heading out in a few minutes to grab a paper. If they do show up and you see them, clip them for me!

Iowa State Fair Photography Salon

We didn't end up getting a chance to submit any photos this year to the Iowa State Fair, and worse yet - we were so busy, we didn't even make it there to see the photography salon, which is our favorite part of the fair (except, for me, the corndogs).

Fortunately, I came across this video from Iowa Public Television with a few of the images from this year's state fair.



For those of you who go to the fair, what is your favorite thing to do/see/eat?

Doug and Molly: Married! Part 4: Ceremony

These are some of my favorite photographs from Doug and Molly's wedding ceremony. I created this image of Molly and her dad, right before her dad gave her away. I love how you can see Doug in the background and the admiring gaze he makes towards Molly.

Kevin captured this photograph during the ceremony from the balcony. As they light the unity candle, Molly looks up at Doug as if to say "I'm so excited we're getting married!" These two moments show just how deeply Doug and Molly care for each other.

One of Kevin's favorite challenges each wedding is to create new and interesting ways to photograph the rings. In this case, he chose to use the wedding program as the background in a way that you can still read the wedding date and location, yet a small enough depth of field to keep the focus on the rings.

Tips for Salvaging Flood & Water Damaged Photos

In the wake of the floods that have devastated many parts of Iowa and other parts in the Midwest, I am trying to put my talents as a photographer and retoucher to good use. I am keeping in contact with an organization, Operation Photo Rescue, whose mission is to restore photographs damaged due to floods and natural disasters. They started during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and, through the help of digital artists from around the world, have restored hundreds (maybe thousands) of damaged photographs.


In talking with OPR, the first and most important thing to do is make sure your damaged photographs are properly cleaned and dried. This brings me to the point I wanted to get out. 

One of the OPR Members offered a very helpful link: Tips for Saving Water Damaged Photos. Here's a few quick highlights: 

  1. Remove photos from the water and separate them from other photos, negatives, albums, etc.
  2. Gently rinse the photos with clean, cold water - But don't rub them and change the water frequently.
  3. Dry face-up on a paper towel (NOT newspaper), laying them flat and out of the elements.
  4. If you don't have time to dry them, stack them between sheets of wax paper and store in a sealable plastic bag (preferably freeze them in a freezer)
  • Try to get to the photos as quickly as possible for better success
