Album Epoca Bridal Album

We just received the album from Doug and Molly's wedding in Ames, Iowa.

Doug and Molly's wedding was very special to us because of the memories involved with it. They had attended ISU together and we created some amazing portraits of them around campus. Our favorite from their wedding day was in front of the campanile. Also they were getting married at the church that they had attended while in college. Molly's sister had also gotten married in this church and we took some portraits of her by this stained glass window that her sister also had gotten portraits taken in front of. We love to photograph these special moments in a couple's life and this is a lot of the fun of photographing weddings.

As you can see, the pages lay flat and allows us to create one continuous page spread with no interruption of the images.

Here are the pages in the album.

Tip: Saving for Photography (or anything else)

Posted by posted by Kevin Barber Monday, December 29, 2008 at

I have heard of this site before, but I came across it again today and thought up a new tip for its use.

Its called "Smarty Pig" and the idea is that it works like a savings account, but the cool thing is that you set a goal - let's say for wedding photography from your favorite photographer (Barber Photography, right? ;-) ) - you can then have your family and friends (who will soon become better friends) help contribute to that goal. Just like a banking account, you earn interest (I think it is like 3.9% right now - kinda hard to beat).

Now you can rest assured that you don't have to settle for less than what you really want in your photography.

Yes, technically, it DOES work for other things besides photography, but just think how many years you'll be enjoying that custom-designed wedding album, or beautiful framed canvas family portrait!

It is also worth pointing out that Smarty Pig is also based right here out of Des Moines!

If you've used Smarty Pig or a similar thing before, please, leave a comment and tell me what you think of it - or do you have any other creative ideas for it?

Des Moines Register Photos of the Year 2008

I came across the [news] Photos of the Year, 2008 from the Des Moines Register. There are 91 photos, so it takes a while to go through them all, but is totally worth it. I don't believe they are in any particular order.

My favorites are 38, 42, 44, 45, 74, 76, and 80. What are yours?

Story of Our Love: Scott and Jessie

Posted by posted by Kevin Barber Tuesday, December 02, 2008 at

It seems to be a trend with us that the weather doesn't cooperate with us for Story of Our Love engagement sessions (to the point of nearly calling it off). However, it also follows that the couples we work with have been very open-minded and we end up capturing some really amazing photographs for them.

Well, we didn't break our streak with Scott and Jessie! As we drove to our first location, Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines (for the dog park), the first snowfall of the year was raging! But between Jessica, Scott and us, we were determined to capture some fun, intimate portraits.

The snowfall subsided after we arrived at Valley Junction. We found some great locations and backgrounds at Valley Junction - had it been warmer (and had more daylight), we could have spent hours photographing there!

As you can see, we still had some light snow on the ground at the dog park. We had a lot of fun with their dogs, Tucker (the Chocolate Lab puppy) and Callie (the Yellow Lab).

Scott and Jessie were high school sweethearts from Valley High School and now live in Iowa City, so we captured part of their session here in Des Moines and the other part will be in Iowa City in the Spring. We can't wait to photograph them at their favorite hot spots around Iowa City.
